It has been a busy summer. I took my mom to Scotland for her 81st birthday. We both enjoy live theatre, so we attended several plays at the Pitlochry. We also got our fill of wonderful Scottish cuisine during the trip.

5 SENATE UPDATE: Senate wraps up last legislative business

The legislative session came to an end last week. Early mornings and late nights have brought many good bills through the legislative process. Those that have passed the Legislature and been signed into law by the Governor will be on their way to the departments, where the changes in law will be implemented.

Last week I had the chance to floor-manage Senate File 2371. This is a good bill for Linn County, our water quality and flooding issues, as it deals with removal of sand and gravel from state-owned land and waters.

It was nice to see visitors from the district at the Statehouse last week. Chris Kivett-Berry, community project director for Linn County Empowerment, and other Empowerment representatives were in Des Moines to talk with legislators about changes in Empowerment.

The pace of this session is keeping me busier than ever. Over the first two weeks, a lot of time was devoted to education bills, as well as reviewing proposals for a major reorganization of state government.

We've taken steps at the Statehouse to help Iowans keep their homes during the current mortgage crisis.
This year, I voted to help prevent certain foreclosures and to provide homeowners with information when they face potential foreclosure.
