GARDEN COLUMN: Container gardening with sphagnum moss

Creating unique container gardens can quickly become a passion for anyone interested in the delight of plants and design. Many different containers can be used and the selection can be endless. Choosing the correct plant combinations, color, texture and form allows you to create a lasting container that will provide you with seasonal enjoyment.
One of my favorite containers to design is made with sphagnum moss. This is not to be confused with common moss found on the north side of a tree in your yard. Sphagnum moss can be purchased in garden centers and does come with a few warnings. Sphagnum moss can harbor bacteria, so it is best to handle this moss with garden gloves and preferably a mask to avoid inhaling potential bacte ria. The beauty of a sphagnum moss container far outweighs the simple precautions required to handle this type of moss.
To start the process of making a sphagnum moss container:
1. Purchase sphagnum moss at a garden center.
2. Work outside, use garden gloves and a face mask.
3. Place the sphagnum moss in a large bucket and add water to submerge the moss. Let the moss soak overnight in the bucket.
4. The next morning, use garden gloves and a face mask and drain the water from the bucket. Squeeze out the excess water from the moss with your gloved hands.
5. A metal or wire container works nicely. Pat moss in a thick layer completely around the container, including the bottom. A thicker layer of moss works better.
6. Add packaged soil to the moss layer inside your container.
7. Arrange your various plant combinations in the soil.
8. Add a top layer of moss, colored rocks or smaller mulch to the top surface of the container once the plants have been arranged, for a more finished look.
9. Adding small gazing balls or garden art to your design creates a unique container.
10. Water the plants as needed.
Note that the moss will be moist initially from the overnight soaking so water accordingly. Watering / misting the sphagnum moss will be an important part of caring for your container, as the moss will dry out, requiring frequent moisture every few days. Use the hose set on fine mist. Your container will last all summer if properly cared for.
Make your container garden dreams come true by exploring the opportunities available in creating a container garden that offers lasting beauty and enjoyment. Enjoy your sphagnum moss container! |
